Images and Resizing

Images or photos on a web page can really bring things together and help to get your ideas across to your viewers. Arranging the images in an orderly fashion keeps the pages looking uniform.

Free Software
I don't recommend Windows Photo Viewer which came pre-installed on my laptop and possibly on yours. I use four free image editors: Irfanview, PhotoFiltre, PhotoScape, and Paint.NET. I only use Irfanview for cropping and resizing images and it is nice for batch resizing. PhotoScape is also used for cropping because I find it to be the quickest, plus its easy to use and has some nice effects and filters. PhotoFiltre I use mainly for quick logo creation but I've created some really cool image effects with it as well, it's easy to use and does a nice job. Paint.NET is much harder to use and does have somewhat of a learning curve. Learning and understanding how to use layers is a must with this editor. Complex graphics can be achieved by advanced users but the novice can achieve suitable results once they are familiar with the software. Despite it's learning curve I still recommend having Paint.NET in your toolbox.

Free downloads
All of the above mentioned software are free and can be downloaded either from their respective sites or from download.com. The latter is a site that checks downloads for viruses, spyware and adware and claims to have safe downloads. When in doubt, always scan your downloads with an anti-virus.

OK, let's get back to the point of this article. Let's say you want to create a vertical column or horizontal row of images. Having the images all the same width in a column produces a clean look as would having the images all the same height in a row. This can easily be be done with Irfanview. Use the batch editor and do an entire folder of photos at once or do single images.

Download Irfanview and install it with the default settings, there is a lot to this program and you can play around with it later but for now all we're doing is resizing images. Keep in mind we're trying to get a site up quickly and with as little effort as possible.

Open Irfanview. Remember to check the box 'Maintain Aspect Ratio', otherwise your images will be distorted, this setting is in the 'Advanced' mode. Set either height or width depending on what you are doing. Select multiple images by holding the 'Control' key and selecting the desired images or right click and 'select' for a single image. Choose your output folder, that is the folder you want the images to be in after resizing. Alternatively, you can output the images into their original folder, if you don't overwrite then you will have two of the same image but in different sizes in the folder. If you choose to overwrite then your resized image will replace the original. I always like to keep the original intact, that way I can resize the image to another size or manipulate it a different way without ever losing the original.

I like playing around with images and the four FREE editors mentioned here make it all possible with no financial investment.
